How Did Infomercials Get Their Start? 07/07/2010
Today's infomercials are much different from the televised sales pitches of the 1960's. This was when infomercials were about 5-10 minutes long and confined to promotions that told viewers that a product existed and motivated consumers to go to the nearest retailer to buy the product. Basically, it just a longer version of the average television commercial we see today. Did you know that infomercial industry was the precursor to the Home Shopping Network and QVC? When you think about it, they are essentially 24 hour mini infomercials, product driven, price driven, and celebrity driven. Buying infomercial products are downright cool! They are useful, inexpensive, and make life easier in so many ways — from cooking to home repair. How many As Seen on TV Kitchen products do you have? Probably several. Gone are the days of loud-mouthed hucksters and snake oil salesmen yelling into the camera. It's just not needed. The gadgets and products advertised on infomercials are slick and they work... or your money back! TV Trivia 06/14/2010
In the 1950s, television burst into the mainstream. While at the beginning of the decade only 9% of U.S. households had a television, over half had one by 1954 - and 86% had them by the end of the decade. The medium proved to be a powerful influence on American society. Over the same period, the United States was engaged in a technology race with the Soviet Union, as a component of the Cold War. American military and political dominance was bolstered by the nation's technologies that harnessed the power of the atom. This focus on technological superiority contributed to a national reverence of intelligence and knowledge. Today, most American households have multiple TVs in their homes and As Seen on TV Products appear on late-night infomercials as well as prime time commercial spots. Most Americans have purchased more than one As Seen on TV Product because they are affordable, useful and make life easier! ![]() Stay warm from head to toe with the Snuggie— a blanket with sleeves.
